In June 2016 there were an estimated 3.1 million foreign nationals present in Turkish territory seeking international protection. Most were Syrians (2,733,044 individuals) who were granted temporary protection status. In addition, 422,895 foreign nationals present in Turkey held residency permits, while 146,485 irregular migrants were apprehended in 2015.
