In November 2020, a total of 10,799 movements were observed across Ethiopia’s five flow monitoring points (FMPs) whereby outgoing movements have continued to be significantly higher (74%) than incoming movements (26%). The percentage of outgoing versus incoming movements have returned to proportions observed before the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in Ethiopia.  A total of 8,034 outgoing movements were observed of which 4,172 (52%) were going to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 1,675 (21%) intended to go to Djibouti and 524 (7%) were going to South Africa. On the other hand, 2,765 incoming movements were observed, of which 1,879 (68%) had originated from Sudan.  All of these were Ethiopian nationals who were returning home through the Metema Flow Monitoring Point in Amhara region and many were likely in Sudan due to the Northern Ethiopia Crisis. It should be noted that data collected at Humera Flow Monitoring Point in Tigray region could not be included due to conflict and the absence of internet and mobile services, thus affecting the total number of movements for this month. 

In October 2020, a total of 11,217 movements were observed across Ethiopia’s five flow monitoring points (FMPs). This represents a 4% increase in daily average movement in comparison with September 2020 when an average of 347 movements per day were observed. However, the average daily movements tracked in October are still 4% less than movements tracked in February 2020 (376), which was prior to the emergence of the first confirmed COVID-19 case in Ethiopia in March 2020. Nevertheless,  the movements have returned to levels observed during the earlier part of the year, before they were impacted by measures taken to contain the spread of of COVID-19 in the region.It should be noted that data collected at Humera Flow Monitoring Point in Tigray region could not be included due to conflict and the absence of internet and mobile services, thus affecting the total number of movements for this month.  Outgoing movements during October have continued to be significantly higher (73%) than incoming movements (27%). The percentage of outgoing versus incoming movements have returned to proportions observed before the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in Ethiopia. A total of 8,207 outgoing movements were observed of which 4,318 (53%) were going to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 1,665 (20%) intended to go to Djibouti and 930 (11%) were going to Somalia. On the other hand, 3,010 incoming movements were observed, of which 1,628 (54%) had originated from Sudan. All of these were Ethiopian nationals who were likely returning home.

In September 2020, a total of 10,414* movements were observed across Ethiopia’s six flow monitoring points (FMPs). This represents a 32% increase in daily average movement in comparison with August 2020 when an average of 237 movements per day were observed, however it is still 8% lower than the average daily movement in February, prior to the emergence of the first confirmed COVID-19 case in Ethiopia in March 2020. The average daily movement has been impacted by measures taken to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the region for more than six months. However, migration trends seem to be changing whereby there have been steady increases in movements since June 2020. Following the ease of COVID-19-related movement restrictions in the region, outgoing movement during September has continued to be significantly higher (75%) than incoming movement (2%) Significantly, the percentage of outgoing versus incoming movements have rebalanced to ratios observed before the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in Ethiopia. A total of 7,803 outgoing movements were observed of which 4,492 (58%) were going to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and 1,074 (14%) intended to go to Djibouti. 2,611 incoming movements were observed, of which 1,538 (59%) had originated from Sudan. It should be noted that most of these movements (1,502) were Ethiopian nationals who were likely returning home.

In August 2020, a total of 7,349 movements were observed across Ethiopia’s five flow monitoring points (FMPs). This represents a 9% increase in daily average movements in comparison with June 2020 when an average of 218 movements per day were observed. However, this is still 37% lower than the average daily movement in February, which is prior to the emergence of the first confirmed COVID-19 case in Ethiopia in March 2020. A total of 5,418 outgoing movements were observed of which 2,659 (49%) were going to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and 1,108 (20%) intended to go to Somalia. 1,931 incoming movements were observed, of which 971 (50%) originated from Djibouti.  

Between 1 April to 30 June 2020, DTM Ethiopia surveyed a total of 907 migrants across 5 Flow Monitoring Points (FMPs). These FMPs are located in Humera, Metema, Galafi, Dawale and Tog Wochale. For the first time in 27 months of flow monitoring activities, incoming movements were higher than outgoing movements for April and May 2020, as many Ethiopians traveled back to Ethiopia due to CoVID-19 related reasons such as loss of jobs and deportation following strict measures to curb the pandemic in host countries. For instance, a total of 253 migrants surveyed reported intending to travel from Sudan to Ethiopia whereby an overwhelming majority (97%) were Ethiopian nationals. Furthermore, returning to one’s home country was the primary reason for traveling as cited by 469 respondents (53%) for the first time, as opposed to traveling for job opportunities which had been the main reason for traveling in previous rounds. Prior to this, outgoing movements would outnumber incoming movements, with the largest group of migrants intending to head to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for job opportunities. 

In June 2020, a total of 6,525 movements were observed across Ethiopia’s five flow monitoring points (FMPs). This represents a 122% increase in daily average movement in comparison with May 2020 when an average of 98 movements per day were observed. The average daily movement has been impacted by measures taken to contain the spread of CoVID-19 in the region. It has gone down from 376 average daily movements in February to 247 in March, to 209 in April, and to 98 in May. However, the average daily movement increased to 218 in June 2020. A total of 3,401 outgoing movements were observed of which 1,089 (32%) were going to Somalia and 1,084 (31.9%) were destined for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. 3,124 incoming movements were observed, of which 1,640 (52.5%) originated from Djibouti.  

In May 2020, a total of 3,049 movements were observed across Ethiopia’s five flow monitoring points (FMPs). This represents a 53% decrease in daily average movement in comparison with April 2020 when an average of 209 movements per day were observed. The average daily movement has been impacted by measures taken to contain the spread of CoVID-19 in the region. It has gone down from 376 average daily movement in February to 247 in March, 209 in April and 98 during May 2020. A total of 1,168 movements were observed leaving Ethiopia, of which 474 (41%) were going to Somalia. 1,881 move-ments were entering Ethiopia, of which 892 (47%) were observed coming from Djibouti.

In April 2020, a total of 5,431 movements were observed across Ethiopia's five flow monitoring points (FMPs). This represents a 15% decrease in daily average movement in comparison with March 2020 when an average of 247 movements per day were observed. The average daily movement has been impacted by measures taken to contain the spread of CoVID-19 in the region. A total of 1,199 movements were observed leaving Ethiopia, of wich 719 (60%) were going to Somalia. 4,232 movements were entering Ethiopia, of which 1,558 (37%) were observed coming from Sudan. 

Between 1 January to 31 March 2020, DTM Ethiopia surveyed a total of 1,325 migrants across five Flow Monitoring Points (FMPs). These FMPs are located in Humera, Metema, Galafi, Dawale and Tog Wochale. The largest demogrpahic group was males between the ages of 25 to 34 years old and constituted 29.1% of the total sample size. As many as 817 migrants indicated that we departed from Ethiopia, and 302 migrants reported that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was their intended final destination. 61.7% of migrants stated that they were travelling for economic reasons. 

In March 2020, a total of 7,648 movements were observed across Ethiopia's five flow monitoring points (FMPs). This represents a 34% decrease in daily average movement in comparison with February 2020 when an average of 376 movements per day were observed. The average daily movement has been impacted by measures taken following the emergence of CoVID-19 in the region. A total of 5,285 movements were observed leaving Ethiopia, of which 2,583 (49%) were going to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). 2,363 movements were entering Ethiopia, of which 1,782 (75%) were observed coming from Sudan. 

Between 1 October to 31 December 2019, DTM Ethiopia surveyed a total of 1,703 migrants across five Flow Monitoring Points (FMPs). These FMPs are located in Humera, Metema, Galafi, Dawale and Tog Wochale. The largest demogrpahic group is males between the ages of 25 to 34 years old and constitute 29.36% of the total sample size. As many as 1,078 migrants indicated that we departed from Ethiopia, and 479 migrants report that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is their intended final destination. 63.4% of migrants state that they are travelling for economic reasons. 

In February 2020, a total of 10,907 movements were observed across Ethiopia’s five flow monitoring points (FMPs). This represents a 5% increase in daily average movement in comparison with January 2020 when an average of 359 movements per day were observed. A total of 7,885 movements were observed leaving Ethiopia, of which 3,977 (50%) were going to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). 3,022 movements were entering Ethiopia, of which 2,313 (77%) were observed coming from Sudan.
